Where does life come from?

Life comes from life -- living things can only come from other living things

Spontaneous generation - the belief that living things can comes from nonliving things
  • Salamanders hibernate in logs during the winter. When people would gather fire wood, the salamanders would be awaken by the flames and would emerge from the fire. People thought that salamanders came from fire
  • Before we had refrigerators, meat would often go bad before people had a chance to eat it. When the meat would rot maggots and flies would appear. People thought that the meat gave rise to the maggots.
Redi and Pastuer conducted experiments to disprove spontaneous generation
