TESTING WEEK!!!

Hello Students!

This week we are taking the FAST tests!  Remember to go to ADVISORY in the morning. This is where you will be taking your exams. These tests are important! They help us (your teachers) adjust our teaching to make sure we are giving you what you need to succeed, get through high school and into college.  Take them seriously and remember to FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS.

Here are some tips to help you get through the week:

1. Get a full night’s sleep. Your goal is to sleep for 8 hours each night this week.  School starts at 8:10 so you probably are awake by 7:00am.  This means go to bed before 11:00pm!!! If you wake up before 7:00am you need to go to sleep earlier.
2. Wake up with plenty of time before the test. You don’t want to be rushed the morning of a stressful test. You’ve got enough going on that running behind can really hurt you. Make sure you have time to wake up, shower, eat, and review before you leave your apartment.
3. Eat a healthy breakfast. Even though your brain is awake, it won’t be functioning at its highest until the rest of your body has been nourished. Opt for a well balanced breakfast with protein and carbohydrates. Scramble some eggs or eat Greek yogurt with fruit or honey and granola.  Your brain can ONLY use glucose for energy so make sure you are eating protein (meat, eggs yogurt) AND starch/glucose (cereal, bread, fruit) in the morning.
4. Warm up your brain!! We always start class with a "warm-up" so you can do your best thinking during class.  Read part of the newspaper, write out PEMDAS or read a few pages from a book. It doesn't matter what you work on so long as you get your brain going!
5. Relax. Before starting your test take a few moments at your desk to just breathe. If you’re overly stressed then you won’t be able to think as clearly as you would otherwise. Getting a good oxygen flow to your brain and the rest of your body will help boost your mood and your score.

The test is long and it will test not only what you know but your perseverance.  Remember that as you are working.  The exam is also testing your ability to stay focused on a task for an extended period of time. You can do it!!!!

We are all cheering for you here at Drew!

NOTEBOOK REWRITE UPDATE

Hello Scholars!

I posted the notes but Blogger (this website) had it set on "private" so no one could see them! I apologize for that and hope this did not affect people negatively this weekend.

For those of you who were absent more than 3 times or students who are new to my class you have until Wednesday (HONORS) or Thursday (AVID) to turn the notes in.

Students who have been present should have completed this assignment regardless of being able to access my notes.  I was only posting the notes for the students who have been absent a lot or new to my class.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Don't forget to do your homework!!

The assignment is posted below this post - rewrite your notes in perfect Cornell style for the scientific method, speed, acceleration and Newton's Laws.

The notes that I posted can be found by looking at the top of this website. There is a tab that says "class notes."

Notebook Re-Write HONORS due Monday, 10/8 AVID due Tuesday 10/9

Assignment: Students are to review their Science notes on the scientific method, speed, acceleration and Newton's Laws and re-write them in perfect Cornell style.  The notes should have a left-hand margin with key-words and questions, a right-hand section with notes and a summary at the bottom of EVERY page.  You have several days to work on this assignment!

Scientific Method
Speed
Acceleration
Newton's Laws

Due Date: Honors: 10/8 AVID 10/9

Materials: Science notes, paper, pen or pencil, highlighting is optional but encouraged

Helpful Hints: Work with friends!  Spend time with some of your fellow scholars and share notes. This is a great way to talk about Science and make sure everyone has all of the material.  If you came into my class later during the year, copy notes from a friend!

Reasoning: I made it through college by using the Notebook Re-Write as a study tool. This will help students perfect their note-taking skills, Cornell skills specifically, which is required a Drew. Also, it will give the students an opportunity to review everything that we have covered so far. Our exam (in 3 weeks) will be comprehensive. It is important that students remember the things that we learned on day one as well as the things they are learning right now.

AVID students will begin being graded on their AVID notebooks. This means that their Cornell notes need to be done correctly. This assignment gives scholars the opportunity to correct and complete their notes, get credit for doing this assignment and improve their notebooks before we do our AVID notebook checks!

HONORS students are required to have Cornell notes. Though Team Michigan does not grade the notebooks collectively, I do notebook checks. In order to get credit for the next NB check I will need to see that all students have Cornell notes.
